Teacher’s rejection of gender identity prompts training

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Teachers and workers in a Florida college district might be given extra variety training after a highschool math teacher refused to name a transgender pupil by her chosen gender identity.

First Coast News in Jacksonville stories that trainer Thomas Caggiano wrote in an e mail to the coed “I will NOT refer to you with female pronouns … If this is not acceptable for you, change classes.”

Caggiano would not remark to the tv station.

Sandalwood High School Principal Dr. Saryn Hatcher promised to “handle” it and wrote to the coed that her needs can be honored.

Duval County Public Schools spokeswoman Laureen Ricks says the trainer’s conduct is inconsistent with the district’s coverage and expectations. She calls it a teachable second and says workers will endure extra variety training.
